      Cavan’s Story

About four years ago, our bright, articulate, creative 12-year-old son, Cavan, was diagnosed with a rare, progressive, potentially fatal mitochondrial disease called Kearns-Sayre Syndrome (KSS). The mitochondria in our cells are responsible for creating 90% of the energy needed to sustain life and support organ function. When mitochondria malfunction, organs begin to fail. People with mitochondrial diseases can lose their eyesight, hearing, motor and pulmonary function, and the ability to control their heart rhythms, which can lead to sudden death. There is no cure for mitochondrial disease; there is no medical treatment to slow down or prevent the disease’s progression.

Because there is no cure for KSS, we must find one. We have already raised over $300,000, and we are committed to raising a total of $500,000 to provide the world’s top mitochondrial scientists with the support they need to perform breakthrough research on KSS.

Please sign up, help us fundraise, and then join us on August 13th at 10:00 am!

Can’t join us? Not a problem! You can donate to a participant, fundraise with a donation page or a Facebook Fundraiser!
